Empowering Electric Vehicle Adoption: The EV Kerbside Charging Grants

As the world moves towards a greener and more sustainable future, electric vehicles (EVs) play a pivotal role in reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change. Recognising the significance of EVs in creating a cleaner environment, the New South Wales (NSW) government has introduced the EV Kerbside Charging Grants program. This initiative aims to support the state’s vision of becoming the most EV-friendly region in Australia, while also increasing charging options for EV owners who lack access to off-street parking. In this blog post, we will explore the objectives of the program, its eligibility criteria, and the types of projects that can receive funding to develop a sustainable kerbside charging market.

Program Objectives:

The EV Kerbside Charging Grants program is designed to achieve several crucial objectives:

1. Enhancing EV Accessibility: The primary goal of the program is to make NSW the easiest place in Australia to own and drive an electric vehicle. By increasing the availability of kerbside charging infrastructure, the program aims to facilitate a smoother transition to EVs for both existing and prospective EV drivers.

2. Addressing Off-Street Parking Limitations: Recognizing that many EV owners face challenges due to limited or no access to off-street parking, the program focuses on providing viable charging solutions for these individuals. Kerbside charging options can alleviate concerns and instill confidence in potential EV adopters.

3. Promoting Sustainable Charging Solutions: The program aims to test different kerbside charging technologies and commercial models. By doing so, it seeks to develop a sustainable market for kerbside charging that can adapt to the evolving needs of EV drivers.

4. Supporting Planning Approvals: The program offers valuable information and support for navigating planning approvals pathways related to kerbside charging installations. This ensures that local governments and charge point operators can proceed with confidence, knowing they have the necessary approvals in place.

Eligibility:

The EV Kerbside Charging Grants program is open to various entities, including:

– Entities incorporated under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth)
– State-owned corporations or subsidiaries of an Australian state or territory-owned corporation
– Local governments or councils in NSW.

You will not eligible to applywithout a valid ABN, lacking appropriate insurance, or unable to privately fund at least 20% (on average) of their proposed project. Additionally, applicants must agree to participate in reporting requirements related to their project.

Types of Funded Projects:

The program offers co-funding for local governments or charge point operators (CPOs) to install, own, operate, and maintain kerbside EV charging infrastructure in eligible local government areas (LGAs). These LGAs are selected based on their population density and limited access to off-street parking for EV owners.

Each applicant can request up to $800,000 from the NSW Government, with a maximum contribution of 80% of the total installation and equipment cost per requested EV charger, capped at $10,000 per charge port. Additionally, applications may include up to 80% of the cost of a 3-year EV charger software subscription for each charging site.

The EV Kerbside Charging Grants program is a commendable initiative by the NSW government to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and create a sustainable and eco-friendly future. By increasing charging options and addressing the challenges faced by EV owners without off-street parking, the program paves the way for a cleaner and greener transportation landscape in New South Wales. As more individuals and organizations embrace EVs, the positive impact on the environment and overall quality of life will be substantial. To promote a sustainable kerbside charging market, interested entities are encouraged to explore the eligibility criteria and seize this opportunity to contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future.  For further information regarding the grant please click here
